UPDATE: It looks like Catherine Zeta-Jones is a reader of UpMyAli. She took our advice, got herself a great lightweight summer dress and a colorful silk scarf and nailed this super-chic, temperature friendly look while on vacation in Portofino, Italy, with her husband. We applaud you Catherine, well done.
Oy. 97 degrees is really, really hot. The humidity does awful things to hair. Unspeakable things. Like turning my hair into a lookalike of Nick Nolte in his mug shot. Need a visual?
You asked for it.
Anyway, long story short, the heat wave got me to thinking how can a girl be fashionable, yet comfortable, while living in Hades-like conditions. I pulled inspiration from the runway (the first place to go) and a few of my favorite celeb fashionistas (Jenny from the Block and the Godmother of all NY fashion) in the form of a great summer dress and super chic head scarf.
My New Favorite Summer Outfit:
In a miracle find at Filene’s Basement, this Ports 1961 was a steal at $129.99. Its fabulous graphite gray (steel) color compliments almost any skin tone and the generous draping and breathable silk fabrication means it will slide along your curves, not hug them (ladies, time to put the bandage dress in storage. Please. At least until Fall). The colorful silk scarf by under-the-radar designer Giles Deacon is a perfect way to embrace the vivid summer color palette (hello, style!), while keeping the humidity-hampered hair in place (hello necessary!). The trick to wearing a head scarf is to first tie your hair back in a low bun or ponytail and then secure the scarf to your head by tying the ends around the hair. Also, avoid heavy makeup and opt for 2 coats of mascara and a neutral gloss a la J.Lo.
Now, the kicker.. literally. NO FLIP FLOPS. Too casual a shoe is the quickest way to ruin a fabulous outfit. Instead, wear a great open toe ankle bootie. This way your feet can still breathe without having to sacrifice style and polish. Here is a Sigerson Morrison pair we picked up at TJ Maxx for a mere $39.99:

So, now there is no excuse to not keep your fashion foot forward even when melting like soft serve from Pinkberry in the hot sun! Stay cool.
